Translation, "《人到中年》". Digital work with found family images and textiles. Part of the series "Translations."

"Translations" is a series of visual translations with a focus on the generational impacts of immigration, family history, and the construction of identity as a first-generation American. In this project, Zhang works with poems written by their father, reinterpreting their contents through personal comprehension of sentiments from unfamiliar time and space.

"《人到中年》" explores a poem written about aspirations of Zhang's father in his youth. Limited family images and heirlooms, as well as memories, come to inform a detached imagination of family history connected to Zhang's father. Meaning moves across language and generation, knowledge and space. Obscurity of the historic and deliberate insertion of self into a present reading of the poem allow multidimensional rifts to enter the process of translation, much like those that are ever-present in the navigation of immigrant identity.
